As we begin to find our way in a new year, there is always lots to think about. Looking back on 2020, we have come through experiences unlike ever before. Embracing things one day at a time – taking uncertainty in our stride and finding opportunities hidden in difficult times.
It can be enriching to think about what you’ve learnt, where you want to do better and how you imagine your year ahead. By looking at the reality of what has been, you’re more in control of where you are and can see where gentle adjustments may be needed.
Before you colour in and finalise your vision for the next twelve months, let’s move through a few nurturing thoughts to ensure a sense of calm – no matter what 2021 brings.
1. Plan for Quiet Mornings
When you wake up knowing that you’ve got a moment planned out just for you – it puts your mind at ease. Whether it be having that first beautiful cup of coffee outside, or setting out ten minutes to clear your mind – you take charge of your day and setup with a sense of calm. Choose one or two things that will make the most difference to your day, and make a point of including these in your morning routine.
2. Breather Moments
As the demands of the day begin to take over, it is easy to get caught up in the whirlwinds. By bringing your focus back to your breath when things get stressful, you’re able to see the bigger picture. When you feel yourself feeling tense or emotional, become aware of your breath. Stop and feel the movement as you breathe. With each exhale, feel your mind and body disconnect from the mayhem. Once you’ve got your perspective, you can carry on with your day. Renewed, and ready to continue.
3. Pockets of Gratitude
Taking the time to appreciate what you have is one of the most powerful tool towards a life of calm. Many of us live in a rush and it can sometimes feel like being “busy” is placed onto a pedestal. When you’re able to just step back and take stock of the good things, you feel better and more equipped to handle any opportunities that come your way. Be grateful for each meal, for the people in your life, for quiet moments, fresh air and the possibilities ahead. As you go about your day, remember to give thanks for all that you have. It may feel unnatural at first, but as you make it part of your routine, gratitude will be the foundation of being more at ease with where you are.
Let a sense of calm bring you back to enjoying your day-to-day. Start your morning with one or two quiet activities just for you, focus on the ebb and flow of your breath when you’re in a tough situation, and keep a grateful approach throughout the day. When you’re able to bring in a greater sense of calm throughout this year, you have more to offer those around you.
